Knauf Attic Insulation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Knauf attic insulation in Riverside every week, and a typical attic insulation replacement for a 1,500 to 2,000 square foot home runs between $1,800 and $3,200 installed. Most Riverside homeowners call us after noticing a spike in their July and August cooling bills, or after standing in their hallway at 2 p.m. and realizing the ceiling feels warm to the touch. If your Knauf insulation has thinned, settled, or gotten wet, it’s no longer doing its one job: slowing heat transfer between your attic and your living space.
What you should know up front: Aspen Attic Insulation Riverside is an independent insulation contractor, not affiliated with Knauf. We install Knauf products because they are a solid fiberglass batt and blown-in line, but we also stock materials from Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Rockwool, CertainTeed, and others so the right product goes into your attic, not just the product we happen to have on the truck that day.
Which Knauf Models This Applies To
Most Riverside attics we work on use one of three Knauf product lines: Knauf EcoBatt (fiberglass batt, available in R-13 through R-38), Knauf Insulation Jet Stream (blown-in loose-fill fiberglass), and Knauf R-Value Certified faced batts (kraft-faced fiberglass with a vapor retarder). The EcoBatt line is the one we see most often in Riverside track homes built from the late 1990s through the 2010s. Jet Stream blown-in is common in newer construction and remodels where the attic floor has irregular joist spacing or lots of can lights and ductwork to work around.
The compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in Riverside: not all R-30 batts are the same thickness. Knauf EcoBatt R-30 is a high-density batt at around 9.5 inches thick, while many competing R-30 batts measure 10.25 or 12 inches. If your attic has a shallow truss heel or scuttle access under 12 inches, a thicker batt can block eave ventilation and create condensation problems. We measure before we quote, because that detail changes the whole job. The other thing worth knowing: if your Knauf batt has a kraft facing, that facing must face the conditioned space (down, in an attic floor), not up against the roof deck. We see that done wrong often enough that it has become the first thing Garrett Sloane checks when he walks an attic.
Signs Your Knauf Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Second-floor rooms run 6 to 10 degrees warmer than the first floor in summer. Heat is pushing through your ceiling because the insulation has settled below its rated R-value. In Riverside, where attic temps hit 130°F and higher from June through September, this shows up fast.
- Cold spots on the ceiling in winter, or a ceiling that feels damp to the touch. Wet insulation loses nearly all thermal resistance. The most common cause we find in Riverside attics is a slow roof leak or a bathroom fan vented into the attic instead of outside, which saturates the Knauf batts directly beneath it.
- You can see the top of the ceiling joists. When insulation has compressed or shifted, joists peek through. Any spot where you can see the joist tops means R-value has dropped below what the original install delivered.
- Energy bills climbing year over year without a rate increase being the only explanation. Riverside Public Utilities and Southern California Edison customers we talk to typically see a 15 to 25 percent summer bill jump when attic insulation has degraded by R-10 or more.
- Rodent trails or droppings in the attic. Rats and mice love nesting in fiberglass batts, including Knauf. Once they tunnel through it, the insulation is both contaminated and ineffective. The fix is removal plus air sealing, not just adding a fresh layer on top.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest pricing picture for Riverside. Blown-in Knauf Jet Stream attic insulation to R-38 in a 1,200 square foot attic typically runs $1,400 to $2,100. Knauf EcoBatt batt replacement to R-38 for the same footprint lands between $1,800 and $2,800, depending on access, existing insulation removal, and whether air sealing is part of the scope. A full removal of old, contaminated insulation plus new Knauf blown-in to R-38 in a 2,000 square foot attic usually falls in the $2,800 to $3,500 range.
| Scope | Typical Range (Riverside) |
|---|---|
| Blown-in Knauf to R-38, 1,200 sq ft attic | $1,400 – $2,100 |
| Knauf EcoBatt batt to R-38, 1,200 sq ft attic | $1,800 – $2,800 |
| Full removal + Knauf blown-in to R-38, 2,000 sq ft | $2,800 – $3,500 |

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a visual check yourself: look for wet spots, dark patches, joists showing through, or a bathtub-shaped depression where insulation has settled. That tells you whether you need to act. What we don’t recommend is removing old Knauf batts yourself. Fiberglass is an irritant, attics in Riverside routinely reach 140°F in summer, and walking from joist to joist on the wrong spot can put a foot through the drywall below. We have seen the aftermath of that more times than we want to count.
If your insulation is wet from a leak, that leak has to be addressed before anything gets installed. We can point you to a roofer or, if it is a bathroom-fan venting issue, fix that as part of the insulation job. If you are unsure whether you even need replacement, call us at (510) 896-3857. We will talk through what you are seeing. If it makes sense to come out, we will. Estimates are free and the price you get is the price you will pay.
FAQs
Knauf fiberglass insulation itself does not degrade chemically, but its effective life in a Riverside attic is realistically 15 to 20 years before settling, dust accumulation, and moisture exposure knock down its R-value enough to matter. Blown-in settles the most, usually losing 10 to 20 percent of its rated height within the first few years. If your insulation is older than two decades, replacement is usually the smarter move than adding a thin top-up layer that does not fix the underlying settling.
If the damage is isolated, say a three-foot section soaked by a one-time leak, we can often remove and replace just that section. But where settling, animal contamination, or widespread moisture has affected more than 30 percent of the attic floor, a full replacement costs less per square foot and performs better than piecemeal patching. We will tell you which situation you are in, with numbers, before you commit to anything. Call (510) 896-3857 for a straight answer.
Most Riverside single-family attic insulation replacements take one day. A typical 1,500 square foot attic with old insulation removal and new blown-in Knauf to R-38 is a 6 to 8 hour job for a two-person crew. Larger attics or jobs with significant air sealing can stretch to a day and a half. We will give you a specific window before we start, not a vague “sometime this week.”
We stock Knauf EcoBatt in R-30 and R-38, Knauf Jet Stream blown-in, and compatible accessories on our trucks. We also carry Reflectix radiant barrier for Riverside attics where that makes sense as a companion product. If a job calls for a Knauf R-value we do not have on hand, we can typically have it within one business day from our local supplier. You will not be waiting weeks.
